Purchasing a home brings with it many benefits and option, including, the type of home lighting the homeowner wishes to use and enjoy on their property, whether it is lighting for the interior or exterior of the home. In fact, illuminating the exterior areas of the property allows enjoyment of the area after the sun sets. Nonetheless, many choices are available in terms of the type of home lighting, for both the inside and outside of the residence. One type of lighting that is available for the exterior of residences is solar patio lights. As with other types of home lighting, many options are available to consumers even within the category of solar patio lights. Options include motion security lights, entry lights, string lights, and pathway lights, among other choices. Moreover, choices are also available when it comes to the material from which the lighting fixture is made. For example, solar patio lights are available in copper, plastic, glass, and metal, among other materials. However, as with most consumer products, some materials are more durable than others, therefore, consumers may also wish to consider which material used in the lighting fixture will better serve the homeowners specific needs.

However, given that solar patio lights work by harnessing the sun's energy during the day and uses it at night, the solar panel component of the lighting fixture must be placed in sunny locations for the lighting to function as the manufacturer intended. In other words, the solar panel should not be installed in a location that is blocked from the sun and/or in locations that are not sunny. With current solar lighting technology, which is evolving and improving, these lights do not tend to work well in climates and or locations that are not abundantly sunny.

Nonetheless, in locations that are sunny, a solar patio light may be a good choice for the homeowner wishing to install patio lighting that is considered green, given its eco-friendliness. Other benefits for using solar patio lights include the fact that the lights are not connected to the electric grid, thus potentially reducing the homeowners electric bill. Additionally, by adding lighting to the exterior of homes, it may help prevent intruders and accidental falls, by the increased security lighting tends to provide.

Thus, even though many choices are available to consumers when shopping for home lighting, and more specifically patio lighting, the solar option may be one they may wish to consider for the aforementioned reasons if they are able to install the lights in a sunny location. Perhaps in the near future, as solar lighting technology continues to improve, these lights will also work well in locations that tend to be cloudy.
